Healing family systems with Art
Facilitators’ training
Who is this training for?
Trainers, coaches, facilitators, therapists, psychologists, resonant healing practitioners who want to support their clients with a variety of approaches, including art.
Everyone who wants to have methods to make steps towards integrating unresolved family history, for example:
- Impactful or painful events that repeat throughout generations or skip generations e.g. - miscarriages, infertility, infant death, early partner’s death, losses etc
- Gender violence and abuse
- Various things that happened in the family and are not talked about
- Being stretched or conflicted between different cultures (e.g mother’s family, father’s family, and/or a culture where the child is growing up)
- BIG systemic things that impacted your family (e.g. war, racism, sexism, discrimination of all sorts, revolutions, forced migration, colonisation, genocide etc)
When such events repeat themselves across family history, we can give ourselves and our loved ones new paths to walk and new resources to bear on, to meet more needs for all involved and to make our lives more wonderful.
These are the recordings of my online live course (Zoom) on transforming and healing your relationship with your family of origin through visual art with NVC and Neurobiology. As you would be watching and following the methods, you can leave your questions or share artwork via comments and attachments, and I will offer support and guidance to your learning the skills that you would be able to use daily.
Why would I want to have access to art-based methods if I can already use words, movement etc for healing purposes?
Sometimes, for some people what was experienced by them or their past generations is too big or too painful for words, or within their culture they feel too much shame and “face loss” to verbalise their experience even in a trusted relationship and setting, or they were pre-verbal when it happened. With art, we can gain access to what we cannot gain access using words. Art also provides an extra “container” to any experience. With these methods, you’d be able to accompany your client through their family relationships, systems and history using art and body-based visualisations. And your client will have an extra container for holding their experiences with warmth and beauty. At the same time, you will be able to add these methods to your toolkit and offer them when your other approaches do not provide the desired level of heaing and transformation.
What will we do?
We will experience and explore the following methods:
1) Mapping out the family system to include everyone who belongs in it - with body-based visualisation and art
2) Seeing who is repeating whose history, mapping it out and re-mapping it for a more needs-meeting way forward - with body-based visualisation and art
3) Seeing how personal trauma shows up in family history, who is carrying which pieces of it for whom and how to stop passing it on to further generations - with body-based visualisation and art
4) Seeing how big events and systems affect the generations and ourselves and finding a better way forward if need be - with body-based visualisation and art
5) Seeing whether and how our partners’ (past and current, dead and alive) family systems’ affect us and how to find a better way forward - with body-based visualisation and art
Olga will accompany you on this journey. By seeing the demos, asking questions, trying out the methods for yourselves, you will internalise the "map" of the method.
photo: Olga's rendition of one of the above methods - another one is in the header of this page. You can see the evidence of the healing and integration - a spontaneous recall of song/poetry, as recorded in the top right corner. Yours may arise in whatever language that speaks to your heart - or for poetically inclined amongst us, it may be even your own poetry!
What art materials will we use?
- Paper, cardboard, or any other support that you like. Any paper will do including printer’s paper - and if you want to use water-soluble media e.g. watercolour, watercolour pencils or watercolour markers, watercolour paper will work better
- Something to draw lines with - something that is water-resistant is a bonus- e.g. ballpoint pen that does not smudge or a fine lines or a brush
- Something to paint with - I will use watercolour and water-based gouache (and occasionally some soft pastels) and compatible brushes. And you can paint with anything else, from crayons to felt tips to markers to pencils to acrylics to pastels etc etc - provided you have the paper or other support and if applicable brushes etc that work with the medium of your choice.
If you want to practice guiding others in those methods, you would need to have a second camera and a set-up with it that allows you to show your drawing surface. It can be e.g. a webcam mounted on a tripod, or a (muted) phone in a holder on a tripod.
